Frequently Asked Questions

I remember my first yoga session, I was nervous and had a lot of questions, as I didn’t know what to expect... below is a brief overview of what will happen in our sessions:

The session will be slightly different each time that we practice (depending on the focus of the session).

Generally each session will begin in a seated posture, where we will take a few moments to close our eyes and connect with our breath. This allows us the time to arrive on our mat and prepare or let go of the daily challenges that we will or have already faced that day.

Like any other fitness session, there will be a gradual flowing (whole body) warm up, followed by a series of flowing poses, which will target your core (stomach muscles/pelvic floor) and the entire body, which will help you to build strength, improve your mobility and increase your flexibility.

Finally we end the session with a relaxation which yogi's call Savasana (pronounced sha-vahs- anna). Savasana helps to relax the whole body and is achieved by lying down on our mat with our eyes closed - connecting with the breath and absorbing the practice that we have just shared.

In Yoga, we end our sessions by bringing our hands to our heart centre and bowing our heads down (whilst saying Namaste). This is simply me thanking you for taking the time out of your busy day to flow with me.

All sessions will be tailored to your needs and, through a discussion with Jill, she will ensure that you start at the appropriate level that is right for you.

Wear something you are comfortable and free to move in. I like to wear tighter fitting trousers (workout leggings) and a vest/long sleeved top, as with some of the yoga poses you won't want your trousers falling up past your knees or your top coming over your head...

Consider wearing layers that you can remove as the class heats up, and easily add back on to avoid cooling down too quickly after the class, and during the relaxation (Savasana).

Jill has all the equipment that you will need for the session. However, water and socks are recommended (I always get cold feet during savasana).

If you do have your own equipment and would prefer to use it, feel free to bring it along to the session. It is good to have your own yoga mat, especially if you are going to practice yoga regularly and start your own home practice and Jill can advise you on the best yoga mats available to buy.

The best advice Jill can give, is that you need to listen to your body. There are certain injuries that clearly require rest and different kinds of treatment. However, if you are working with issues such as muscle sprains, sciatic pains or joint problems, then a carefully planned yoga practice can aid the healing process. Please phone Jill to discuss any injuries / conditions that you may have. Jill is trained in modifying and adjusting to ensure that you achieve the maximum benefits of the practice. It is important to note that you are not required to disclose anything that you feel uncomfortable discussing... however, Jill cannot be held responsible for any problems that occur as a result of non-disclosure.
